The origin of the Maurya surname is very complicated. It originated from the king, Chandragupta Maurya. In history the origin of the Maurya surname can be divided into two facts. One fact says one thing, history says another. The facts says that Chandragupta Maurya belonged to the Kshatriya Shakya clan, the Moriyas, which belong to the the Himalayas regions (Pippalivana) on the India and Nepal border. The Moriya clan, called Maurya Chandragupta; Maurya's mother's name was Mura. Mura belongs to the Moriya clan; perhaps she was queen (chief) of the Moriya clan. Her place where she lived, Peacock (in Hindi: Mor) like structure was called Moriya. After the death of Chandragupta Maurya's father, she migrated with his family to Pataliputra, India, where Chandragupta meet Chankya, his teacher.

All belong to at the present time to the Koiri subcaste. In some regions this is called Verma, Kushwaha, Saini, Maurya or Shakya. This is mainly in Uttar Pradesh, India. In Uttar Pradesh, a city, like in Varanasi - this is called Maurya; a city, like Ghazipur - this is called Kushwaha; a city like Mau and Ballia - this is called Verma; and in Western Uttar Pradesh - this is called Shakya and Saini. In Hariyana state, this is called Shaini. In Bihar, this is called Mahto, Kushwaha and Kachhi and in the country Nepal, this is called Shakya. This is distributed in India statewise: Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Hariyana, Maharashtra and all over India and Nepal.
