From ME. marchaunt, AF. marchant, a 'merchant,' Latinized mercator in early charters. Radulph Mercator held land in Dunfermline a. 1214 (Kelso, 11), and a later Radulph Mercator was a charter witness in Dundee in 1281 (HP., II, p. 223). Thomas called Marchand was a canon of Brechin in 1298 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 576). Morice Merchande was barber of the burgh of Dumbarton in 1456 (Struthendrick, p. 192), and in 1495 there is mention of the tenement of Elizabeth Merchand there (REG., 471). Isobella Merchand was retoured heir of Alexander Merchand, burgess of Kilmareis (Kilmaurs) in 1600 (Retours, Ayr, 31), and presumptions of witchcraft were given in against Marat Merchant in Brechin in 1650 (Extracts, Records of Presbytery of Brechin, 1639-1660). Other old spellings are Merchan, Mertchand.
