Earliest recordings of the name are from East Anglia, specifically Bury St Edmunds. Later, Alexander Margern (b ca. 1565) lived in Wiltshire and raised his family near Steeple Ashton.
Henry Margerum emigrated to the colony of Pennsylvania in 1682 from Little Cheverel, Wiltshire, as a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers). All American Margerums are thought to be descendants of Henry.
