From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a nickname. This surname seems to have had Staffordshire for its home.

John Marigold, minister of Cartmel, 1643: Baines Lancashire. (Croston).

Possibly the same clergyman is referred to in the following:

1643. 'Item, for charges and expenses uppon divers Ministers (to witt), Mr. Fornace, Mr. Mariegould ... which bestowed their paines in preaching with us when wee had no constant minister': Northenden Church, East Cheshire.

This is confirmed by the fact that a John Marigold occurs as 'pastor of Waverton,' in Cheshire, in 1648. He seems to have died in 1662.

1662. John Margold, of Waverton, dirk: Wills at Chester.
