Markey Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Celtic) Horseman, Rider [Irish mar- cach = Gaelic marcaiche-marc, a horse]
Ó Marcaigh The sept of O’Markey has always been closely identified with Oriel, especially Cos. Louth and Monaghan. It has sometimes been changed by translation to Ryder; but Ryder is mainly found in north Connacht where it stands for Markahan, q.v. SIF 109
This is Ó Marcaigh in Irish, and is a true Oriel surname; for whether we look at early records or consult modern statistics we find it in Counties Monaghan or Louth or quite near one of these-though actually the earliest reference to the name I have met records the fact that one Robert O'Markey was outlawed in Co. Tipperary in 1302. The prefix O was still retained in the seventeenth century, e.g. in the Monaghan hearth money rolls, but was already falling into disuse: it appears simply as Marky among the principal Irish names in Co. Louth in the “census” of 1659, and in modern times the O seems to have been completely discarded. In its homeland and in Dublin, Markey has been widely changed to Ryder, in this case a genuine (not, as is so often the case, a spurious), translation for marcach means a horseman.
Another synonym reported from the Oriel country is Mark, but not all people so called are Markeys for Mark is also an English name. It is perhaps worth noting that the list of kern mustered in 1544 by the O'Reilly of the day includes one Thomas Marke.
