This is an old family in Kilkenny, a suburb of which is called Marnell's Meadows. In the “census”
of 1659 the name in Kilkenny appears as Mornell. It was also found in Co. Tipperary: the sixteenth century “pardons” for that county include Marnells of Killinleigh and Slieveardagh and in the next century the fact that another Co. Tipperary man named Edmund Marnell was transplanted under the Cromwellian regime as an Irish papist is a further indication of their having become hibernicized. In modern times, the name, though not numerous, is still associated with Co. Kilkenny and adjacent areas.
