This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the maples,' from residence beside the mapletrees. Evidently some spot in West Riding of Yorks; compare Mapplewell, a village near Barnsley. The modern Yorkshire form seems to be Marples.

In 1784, John Marples rented a farm at Stavely Hague of the Chesterfield Corporation (G.), and his name is still represented there. Thomas Marple was a copyholder Bonsall in 1620 (G.). The name of Marples occurs in the list Notts freeholders in 1698 ("Harl. MS.," 6846).
