Name of villages near Lugo, Seville, Teruel, Salamanca, and Ciudad Rodrigo. Derived from latin "Martinus" - the Roman god Mars. Extensive use throughout latin countries probably in honor of charitable Saint Martin from France. Name is origin of several other popular names including Martínez (see) and Marzo.

In addition to meaning a warlike man, "martin" also refers to the bird, kingfisher.
