The name Maschtall comes from the Teutonic Knights who inhabited Eastern Prussia in the 13th century. They came to Christianize the original inhabitants of Prussia. Many had been Crusaders in the Holy Land previously and some were of Czech origin. The word in Czech means 'stable', as in where you keep the horses, and the knight who was in charge of the horses was called a maschtaller. Nowadays, you find people with this surname in Poland and in Kaliningrad, but they were all descendants of the Teutonic Knights and German (specifically Prussian) for 8 centuries.
