There is no evidence in Scotland that this surname had any other origin than from the occupation, OF. masson, French macon, a mason. In the Middle Ages we find it Latinized cementarius. About 1180 or later Magister Roger cementarius de Forfar witnessed a charter by Ingelram de Balliol (RAA., I, p. 39). He was probably the chief builder or superintendent of the royal palace at Forfar. Gregory, cementarius, who witnessed a charter by Andrew, bishop of Moray, in 1237 (REM., 121) was, says Cosmo Innes, in all probability one of the persons employed in the building of the cathedral church of Elgin (ibid., pref., p. XIII). Richard the Mason was burgess of Aberdeen in 1271 (Fraser, p. 9). John le Massun (or le Macune) of Gascony had a claim against the bishop of St. Andrews in 1288 (Bain, II, 359). William dictus Masceon who had a charter of land in the burs'll of Berwick in 1307 (Kelso, 43) is probably William Maceoun de Berwick who received a payment from Exchequer in 1327 (ER., I, p. 80). William Maceoun had a charter of land in the tenement of Mertone (Morton) near Edinburgh in 1315 (RMS., I, 15), William dictus Maceon was burgess of Peebles in 1317 (Peebles, 6), and William Macone was witness in Roxburgh, c. 1338 (Dryburgh, 313). Nicholas cementarius, custumar o: Stirling, 1360, appears in the following year as Nicholas Masoun (ER., II, p. 14, 60). He is probably the individual who did the sculpture work of the tomb of Robert 11, 1377 (ER., II, p. 585) Thomas Mason or Masson, a kinsman of Robert, earl of Fife, claimed the office of prior of Lochleven in 1388 (Pap. Pet., I, p. 575,576). The surname appears in Edinburgh in 1392 as Masoun (Egidii, p. 27), Adam Massovn was burgess of Glasgow in 1413 (REG., 323), Sir John Mason was vicar of Crawfurde Lyndyssay in 1435 (LSC., 114), Peter Masoune was canon of Dunkeld in 1436 (REB., I, 85), David Mayssone was a presbyter of Glasgow in 1463 (REG., 389), Mychell or Michaele Mason was witness in Ayr, 1471 (Friars Ayr, p. 54; Ayr, p. 91), and William Mason, 'breuer,' a native of Scotland, received letters of denization in England in 1480 (Bain, IV, 1462). There was a family named Mason (Meason, Maison, Mas-soun) prominent in Orkney in the sixteenth century (REO.).
