This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Masey.' A Norman surname that came over with William. Hamon Massie acquired Dunham, in Cheshire, and the patronymic spread rapidly. Mr. Lower points out several places in Normandy whence the name may have come, 'viz. Mace-sur-Orne, Macei in the arrondissement of Avranches, Marcei in that of Argentan, and Marcei, on the Broise, near the town of Avranches.
