In Scotland the eldest sons of barons are designed 'Masters,' and the uncles of lords were also called Masters, "which occasioned afterwards the word master to be given to ersons whose names were not known" (Nisbet, II, pt. IV, p. 191). It was also the title of the individual who had charge of an hos-ital, as, e.g. Radulphus, magister Hospitalis de Soltre, who swore fealty in 1291.
