The origin of this surname can be traced to the Teutonic Knights, who came to Eastern Europe from Germany in order to convert non-Christians in Prussia. The Bishop who led the Crusade was Czech, however, and the Czech word mashtal means 'stable', i.e., the place where horses are kept. The knight who was in charge of the stable was called maschtaller. Over the centuries, as they became integrated into Poland or Ukraine, the spelling of the name changed. The original name is Maschtall, with the German spelling.
