This surname is most probably derived from the name of the old parish of Meathie or Mathie, united to that of Inverarity in 1612 and suppressed in June, 1667 (Scott, Fasti, III, p. 774). (2) It may also be a diminutive of Matthew, but I think the local derivation more probable in Scotland. John Mathei or Mathy was juror on an assize at Liston in 1459 (Edmonstone, 80), William Mathe, witness in Rrechin, 1497 (RER., I, 216), and Andro Mathy was tenant of the Grange of Abirbothry in 1506 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 257). Andrew Mathe deponed to the right boundaries of the Monks Myre in 1546 (ibid., II, p. 4), and a barn and pertinents in Glasgow were sold to David Mathy in 1550 (Protocols, I). Thomas Mathy, witness in Monkland, 1518 (Simon, 47). George Mathie, burgess of Rrechin, 1652 (Inquis. Tut., 783). John Mathie, skipper in the Panns, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser.
