This name has been rendered "modest face;" from Anglo-Saxon mathie, modest. It is rather a corruption of the celebrated Norman surname De Martin vast (found written De Martivas); from the château of Martinvast, near Cherbourg; from German fest, a fortress. compare the surname Standfast; from stein fest, stone fortress. Might appear to be a personal description of the most uncomplimentary kind; but, like the unpleasing Gumboil, said to stand for Gundobald, it is not so bad as it looks. I have established its identity with Maltravers
