Very old Basque surname of toponymic origin, rare and distributed in Spain, although it is recorded mainly in Barcelona, Madrid, Almería, Vizcaya, Álava, Granada and Murcia, being less present in La Rioja, Ciudad Real, Navarra, Malaga, Baleares, Alicante, Valencia, Cádiz, Córdoba, etc.

It comes from the toponym Maturana, name of a population belonging to the Aytº. from Barrundia (Álava), whose origin is in the Basque –Maturan-voice, 'vega aguanosa', 'zarzal'. Already in the year 1080 Sancho Martínez de Maturana, before a notary, appeared as a witness of a donation, in the concept of knight hijodalgo of blood and known solar.

When the Emperor Charles V entered Vitoria, Juan Sáez de Maturana, who was a notary of the 'Sacra e Católica Majestad e su Notario público en la Corte y en todos los sus Reynos y Señoríos', signed the act of this event.

His brother, Martín Sáez de Maturana was Alderman of the city of Vitoria, being witness of the oath of Monarch to the Privileges, uses and customs of the city. These Maturana, from Vitoria, had a chapter seat on the main altar of the cathedral, and their weapons were sculpted and painted on the altarpiece.

Martín and Juan de Maturana proved their nobility, in 1568, before the ordinary Justice of Eibar. Those with this surname proved their nobility in the Military Orders of Santiago (1761) and Calatrava (1787).
