From Machan, an old parish in Lanarkslvre, now called Dalserf. In ancient Hamilton charters the barony is called Machanshire, and there is still a small estate called Machan within the parish. David de Machan appears as a charter witness in the reign of Alexander II (REG., p. 145), and Thomas, son of John de Machan, was juror on an inquisition held by the sheriff of Lanark, 1263 (Bain, I, 2677). William de Maghan and Patrick de Maghan of Lanarkshire rendered hom-v age, 1296 (ibid., 11. p. 213). Sir Adam de Mauchan was archdeacon of St. Andrews, 1300 (RPSA., p. 120), and David, son of Walter de Machane, and John his brother are witnesses at Cadiou (Cadyow), 1367-68 (REG., p. 281,282). John Mauchan, bailie of Edinburgh, sat in the Scots parliament, 1548, John Mawchtane held a land in Glasgow, 1550 (Protocols, I, Mr. Alexander Mauchane was advocate and sheriff-depute of the county of Edinburgh in the sixteenth century, and Jonet Mawhane was resident in the parish of Colwend, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 582). The surname appears as M'Han in Timothy Pont's ms. Machanne 1556, Machen 1597, Mauchquhan c. 1523, Maw-chane 1550; Mauchain, Mauthane.
