Maurand Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Maur is a root word meaning 'dark' and is related to the peoples across the Mediterranean from France - places that today still bear the root phoneme: Mauritania, Morocco (or it's variant, Marrakesh) in west Africa, and the island off east Africa, Mauritius. This is how the Moors got their name. The early Christian martyr, St. Maurice, a dark-complected Egyptian, bore the name, as did the ninth century mystic, Rabanus Maurus. The -and ending is a generic ending indicating 'Frenchness'. Maur is a black dragon in the book "The Hero and the Crown." Maurano (there are many!), 'Morin' (pronounced Mor-AN) and Moran are variations of the form, but not Marin or Marino (think 'marine, water).
- nick_nameComes from the Latin word root, maur- or, mor-, meaning someone having dark skin or hair, "like a Moor."
