From Gaelic maor, a subordinate officer in various capacities, a steward. The Scots pronunciation is Mawr. Mavor is a Speyside surname. Wille Mawar and Johnne Mawar were declared innocent of any art in the detention of King James m in Edinurgh Castle, 1482 (Lennox, II, p. 123). Walter Mawer witnessed a bond of caution in 1564 (ER., XIX, p. 530). John Mawar in Urquhart was warned to appear before the Lord Regent, 1574, and David Mawer of the Loch (Lochs near Urquhart) was slain by some Inneses, 1576. Thomas Maueris is witness in Aberdeen, 1577 (SCM., II, p. 45), and Mark Mawar was member of Scots parliament for Elgin, 1593 (Hanna, II, p. 505). Michael Mawar was portioner of Urquhart, 1587, and John Mawer was a portioner t lere, 1595 (SCM., II, p. 129). Alexander Mawer was tenant under the marquis of Hundy, 1600 (ibid., IV, p. 287), and another Alexander Mawer was mair-depute in Aberdeen, 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 263). Mark Mawer of Mawerstoun (the town or (un of the maor) is in record, 1608 (Cawdor, p. 222), and Magister Walter Mawer was heir of Walter Mawer of Mawerstoun in lands in Fife, 1608 (Sc. Ant., VI p. 40; Retours, Fife, 193). Mark Mavers was prisoner in the tolbooth of Elgin, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 258), and John Maver of Overmest was indweller in Garmouth, perish of Urquhart, 1697 (Moray). William Maver in Banff (b. 1775) edited an edition of Dr. Johnson's Dictionary in 1809 with several thousand additions. In Anglicized spelling of Gaelic names w was often used for v, English Mawer, from mawer, 'a mower,' is of different origin.
Mawer was the name of a family that held much property in Winthorpe and in other places in the county 300 years ago (O.). There were Mawers in Ereiston in the reign of Elizabeth (T.).
