Mawhinnie Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

There is no doubt that MacWeeney is Mac Mhaonaigh, the earlier form of which was Mac Maenaigh, the name of a sept of Moylurg in the modern Co. Roscommon. This is close to north Leitrim where the MacWeeneys (excepting those who have migrated to Dublin) are mainly to be found to-day. However some confusion must arise from the fact that the Ulster name usually spelt Mawhinney is also Mac Whinney, for which many synonyms have been recorded by local registrars: among these are MacQuinney and MacWeeny. The latter is very rare in Ulster and is normally a variant spelling of the Connacht MacWeeney. Some of the synonyms of Mawhinney are interesting. In the Lisburn area it has been made Mawhannon: this in turn was called Bohannon and in Co. Antrim became Buchanan, which of course is the name of a well known Scottish clan. The Buchanans of Omagh are of Scottish origin.

It has been suggested that the Irish form of Mawhinney is Mac Shuibhne, and its synonym MacQueeney gives phonetic corroboration of this. Mac Shuibhne is a variant of Mac Suibhne (MacSweeney). The “census” of 1659-60 records 15 families of MacWynny and Mac A Vynny in Co. Fermanagh; both of which can be equated with the modern Mawhinney and not with MacWeeney.
