While an exact origin and meaning is unknown, it is suspected that an illiterate ancestor shortly after the civil war spelled his last name (phonetically pronounced may-hew) several different ways, hence why Mahugh is pronounced that way despite its unusual spelling. Hence it's meaning and origin would be on Mayhew (most likely, maybe Mayhugh). It's French meaning is 'gift of God' and it originated after 1066 (Battle of Hastings) when a Norman won honours and therefore became a lord.
