Mahtesi (մահտեսի) means a 'person who went to pilgrimage to Jerusalem and saw the tomb of Jesus Christ'. Mah (մահ) in Armenian means 'death' and tes (տես) means 'to see', so consequently mahtesi means 'to see death'. Usually Armenian surnames end with suffix -yan or -ian, meaning 'issued from'.
