MACADIE, Macaddie, Maccadie: Anglicized forms of Gaelic MacAda, better MacAdaidh, from Adaidh, the Gaelic dialectal form of Lowland Scots Adie, which see. Gillemichel M'Ade and his son Cearmec are famous in Strathardle tradition. Duncan, son of Gillemychel Mcath, exeambed a davoch of land of Petcarene in Strathardol for the lands of Dolays Mychel, 1232 (REM., p. 88). John McChaddy and others in Fearn were denounced for oppression in 1596 (RPC., V, p. 304). Robert M'Kodie in Toldaguhiil, 1730 (Aberdeen CR.). The Fergusons of Baknacruchie, by a custom common in the Highlands, were known as MacAdies, and even after the families of this sept left Strathardle and settled in the Vale of Atholl they were always known as MacAdies. These MacAdie Fergusons have been identified with the "Clan Aid" of the 1467 MS. whose eponymus Gillamithil son of Aidh falls about the same time as the above Gillemychel Mcath. Mac-Adaidh, an Easter Ross surname, is also an alternative surname for Munro in certain families.
