MACCALMAN, Maccalmon: Gaelic MacCalmain, 'son of Caiman.' A variant of Maccolman, which see. It is also translated Dove, which see, and it often represents Murchison, which see. Mr. Alexander McAlman, dean of Argyll, was allowed to take the Test, 1682 (RPC., 3. ser VII, p. 343), Jon McCalmin was a fencible-man in Nether Lorn, 1692 (Commons, p. 35), and Archibald M'Calman was schoolmaster at Dull, 1765 (Dunkeld).
