In 1684 the name appears as Makkanless, McCandlish McAndlish M'Canleis, and M'Caunles (Parish). The spelling with Mac is probably now extinct. From Irish MacCuindlis or MacCuindilis, son of Cuindleas (an old Irish name-Woulfe). See Candlish.
