MACBARRON: 'son of the baron.' It was a Gaelic custom to call small landed proprietors a baron. Finlaw Macawaran, who consented to his mother's surrender of her share of the lands of Glenserw in 1403 (OPS., II, p. 86), was a Maccorquodale. John Rose, first of Wester Drakies, third son of Hugh the ninth laird of Kilravock, was called Mac-a-Bharon (Rose, p. 526). The name occurs in Inverness in the sixteenth century as M'Barroun. The 'Mac' is now dropped, and Barron is a well-known surname there. Robert Makwarrane witnessed a charter of lands in the barony of Duntreith, 1531 (RMS., III, 1000), and Malcolme Makwarron was a follower of the earl of Argyll, 1536 (RSS., II, 2152). The Lame of Donald Makvarraniche, servitor in Inverness (Laing, 1399), is from the adjectival form of the name in -ach. James Steuart alias McVarroun was free burgess and guild brother of Inverness, 1607 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 52). John and Donald McBarroun are mentioned in the same document as McCarroun in 1619, and Duncan McAvarrane VcClauchlane and Robert Awarrane VcLauchlane in Innerchuirie were also punished in 1619 for illegally carrying firearms (RPC., XII, p. 112—113,134). Robert M'Barron was a charter witness in Dunblane, 1539 (RMS., III, 1974), and James M'Banoun was a witness in Inverness, 1586 (Laing, 1111). Thomas McWarron in Bunchrwe, 1672 (IDR., p. 28).
