MACBRAYNE: Gaelic Mac a' Bhrituhainn, 'son of the judge.' Writing in 1630 Sir Robert Gordon describes the breive as "a kynd of judge amongst the ilanders, who hath ane absolute judicatorie, vnto whose authoritie and censure they willinglie submitt. betuein partie and partie" (A Genealogical history of the earldom of Sutherland, Edinburgh, 1813, p. 268). As the office was hereditary it placed great power for good or evil in the hands of men "whose qualifications, as arbitrators, must have been of an unequal nature; and whose judgments can hardly have been free from bias" (Mackenzie, Outer Hebrides, p. 62). The "chapellanry of Sanct Coline and Sanct Finlagane situat in the isle of Ilaa. vacand be the deces of schir Angus Macbreochane" in 1503 (RSS., I, 911). Eugenius Makbrehin was a student at St. Andrews, 1525 (ERUS., p. 220). Duncan M'Breyane in Cnocknalelit and Anna M'Breyne in Gortenagor appear in 1672 (HP., II, p. 207,209), and Donald McBrayan held a kerroran (probably equivalent to a 'groat-land') in Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 518). Duncan Mcbrain and Archibald Mcbrain were rebels in Argyllshire, 1685 (Commons, p. 4, 6). One MacBraine, an employee in Mackintosh's 'secret work' for the manufacture of cudbear, sold the secret of manufacture to a company in England at the end of the eighteenth century.
