MACBRATNEY, Macbratnie: An old Galloway surname. G, Mac Breatnaigh, 'son of the Briton' (of Strathclyde). compare Galbraith. The fermes of Clontag and Knockane in Galloway were granted to Martin Birtny or Macbirtny,. 'chiteriste,' in 1471 (ER., VIII, p. 89). Elsewhere in the same record Martin appears as Makbrechne (1473, p. 163), McBartny (1474, p. 215), Makbretny (1475, p. 287), Vertue (1477, without 'Mac,' p. 420), and M'Berkny (1479, p. 605). During the years 1502—07 he still enjoyed the fermes of Knokan for his fee, and during these years his name is given variously as Makbretny, Makbarkny, Makbretne, and McBertny. John McBretny was burgess of Quhithern in 1532 (RMS., III). Gillinveine M'Vretny in Killmaluag in Kelislate is in record in 1723 (Campbell, I, p. 188). In Galloway the spellings McBraten, McBretnie, and Malbratnie are found in 1684 (Parish). Lauchlan Mcbretnach was a rebel in Kilberrie, 1685 (Commons, p. 4). McVrettny 1685.
