McCarbry Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
MACCAIRBRE: 'son of Cairbre' (the 'charioteer'). Stevin M'Kerbrycht was charged in 1484 with the offence of "lichtlying and contempcioun done to our Souerane Lordis Hienes" (ALA., p. 89, 90). Archibald Makharbri (Makharbry, or M'Herbre) was a student at St. Andrews University, 1508—11 (ERUS., p. 98,100). The obit of Patrick M'Carbe is given under the year 1517 (Chr. Fort., p. 116). In 1527 there is entry of the gift on the nonentres of the two mark land of Little Murlogane, etc., to Archibald McCarbre (RSS., I, 3720), doubtless the Archibald above mentioned. As Makcarbre he witnessed a Glenurquhay bond of manrent, 1538 (BBT., p. 183). A letter of safeguard was issued to Archibald Makarby in 1529, who appears again as rector of Kilquhoman in Ila, 1542 (RSS., II, 59, 4739). Finlay McCarbre, Donald McCarbare, John McCarbre, and Duncan McCarbare were followers of the earl of Argyll, 1536 (ibid., 2152) John Dow M'Arbrie witnessed a bond in 1586 and Patrick Makarbrie in 1597 bound himself if he shall marry and have children to dispone to Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenurquhay and his heirs "a bairn's part of gear" (BBT., p. 240,225). John M'Carber was a weaver in inveraray, 1694 (Campbell, I, p. 11), and Elspeth M'Harbrae is recorded in Little Houm, 1712 (Dunkeld). From the fifteenth to the seventeenth century "there were twenty-four small landed proprietors (or wadsetters, as they were called), of the name of Macairbre in Breadalbane; but not a man of that name is now to be found, nor is there even a tradition of one of them having ever been extirpated, or their lands taken from them by force. All became extinct by natural causes. One of these M'Cairbres, probably their chief, possessed Finlarig Castle, afterwards one of the principal seats of the family of Glenorchy. In the former editions M'Cairbre was by mistake spelt M'Rabie. Great antiquity is given by tradition to the M'Cairbres; they are said to be descended from Cairbre Rua, frequently mentioned by Ossian. Archibald Fletcher, Esq., Advocate, is descended from the M'Cairbres in the female line, and in failure of the male line, may be considered as their representative" (Stewart, I, p. 26).
