Carraher or Carragher, usually without the prefix Mac, is quite a numerous name in Counties Monaghan and Louth. Woulfe states that it is a variant of the Scottish Farquhar, i.e. Mac Fearchair with the initial F aspirated. Mac Fhearchair, however, may be indigenous to Ireland: it is on record at Dysart, Co. Louth, as MacCarchir as early as 1616, well outside the territory affected by the Plantation of Ulster.
In 1663 MacCarraher occurs in the Co. Monaghan Hearth Money Rolls in the barony of Dartree. Several eighteenth and early nineteenth century wills of Co. Louth testators of the name are on record.
