MACAVISH, Maccause, Maccavish, Macawis, Maccaws: In Gaelic MacThaimhais, 'son of Tammas,' the Scottish form of Thomas. John Gorum Mactawys was a charter witness in Glasgow in 1456 (LCD., p. 179). Duncan Makcawys acquired the five mark land of Ardequhlg in Weem in 1475 (SBR., p. 256). Donald McCawis was tenant of Eglisdisdane and Balnegregane in 1480 (ER., IX, p. 561), and Donald M'Awis, son and heir of the late Duncan M'Awis is in record in 1482 (Scot. Ant., XI, p. 30). Duncan M'Cause and Allan M Cause, bailies on the lands of Glastre in Argyllshire belonging to James Scrimgeour, constable of Dundee, in 1490, appear in the following year as Makavhis (HP., II, p. 188,190). The death of Donald M'Cawis is recorded in the Chronicle of Fortirgall in 1494; Henry M'Cawis was a witness in Ayrshire in 1485, and Thomas M Cawis, a men or of the same family, held land there in 1505 (RMS., II, 1639, 2899). Lauchlan M'Cawis was vicar of Lochgoyle in 1528, and Roland or Ronald Makawis was vicar of Inchalt in 1542—45 (RMS., III, 556, 2909, 3132). John M'Caws appears as juror on an assize in Ayrshire, 1532 (ibid., 1196), and in the same year a precept of legitimation was issued to Lauchlan Makcawis, natural son of Eugene Makcaus (RSS., II, 1188). John McPhadrick VcAlves in Auchingyle, and Duncan Ger McAves in Little Ballernick were fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 644). Thomas M'Cawis was served heir to John M'Cawis, his granduncle's son, in two marks and a half of the lands of Leanach in the barony of Strathlaffin 1627 (Retours, Argyllshire, 28). Donald McGillechallum VcEane Dow VcCavyes was charged with fire-raising in 1628 (RPC., 2. ser. II, p. 517); Donald McCaweis was servitor to Campbell of Inverlevir, 1655 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 75); and Duncan McCaueis in Ardphuir Castell witnessed a testament in 1676 (Genealogist, new ser., XXXII, p. 24). Duncan McAvis was tacksman of Kepprogane in 1684, and Donald Moir McAvish, tacksman of Corpleyne in the same year (RPC. 3. ser. VIII, p. 569). Tavish Mc cavish was rebel in Kiliean, Kintyre, 1685 (Commons, p. 3), and Tais Mcavish, elder of Kenmore Kirk, 1729 (FB., p. 359).
