From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCHLERY, Maccleary, Macclery: Gaelic M'a'Chleirich, 'son of the clerk,' i.e. cleric. M'CIeri is found in 1376 (RHM., II, p. 16), and John Clerici (i.e. Macclerich) had a remission from James I for offenses committed by him in 1428 (Rose, p. 126). Malcolm M'Cleriche who was one of an inquest to determine the rights of pasturage which the Temple lands had over the adjoining town and territory of Letter in 1461 (Strathendrick, p. 222) may be the Malcolm M'Clery who appears as witness in Stirling, 1475 (SBR., p. 256). Dugall Clerk (without Mac) had a royal remission for slaughter committed by him in 1497 (Rose, p. 164), Duncan Mclnclerycht witnessed an instrument of sasine at Duthil, 1537 (Grant, III. p. 270), Husceoun M'Clerich and Husceoun M'Inclerich were tenants in Lochalsh, 1549 (RMS., IV, 204), Donald Gaw McClerich in Morlagane and Duncan McCleriche in Glenlyoun were fined for reset of members of outlawed Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC XIV, p. 631,633). George Makclearie, tailor in Edinburgh, 1648, and Catharine M'Clirie, resident there, 1674 (Edinb. Man.). Hew M'Lerich and Donald M'Lerich were tenants of Barquhill, 1672 (HP., II, p. 209), and Finlay M'Aclerich appears in Auchlyne, 1638 (BBT,, p. 402). The form M'AcIerycht is also common in BBT. In the sixteenth century, and in Islay in 1733 we have M'lnclerie. Of the Clarks of Clan Chattan Mr. Mackintosh says:"This sept was always a small one, and as its heads do not appear to have had any particular holding or lands the traces of it in documents of old date are few" (Clan Chattan, p. 592).
