MACCRISTIE, Maccristin: Galwegian surnames, from Christie or Cristie, diminutives of Christian, which see. In the end of the thirteenth century the earl of Levenax transferred to Sir John of Luss the homage and service of Gillechrist Mac crystine and his heirs (Levenax, p.. 20). John McCristyne or Makcristyne was bailie of Wigtown in 1459 and provost in 1471 (ER.). Symon Makcristen had a charter of the lands of Mwnkhill granted him in 1484 by the provost and bailies of Wigtown (RMS., II, 1623). He appears again in 1503 as Symon Makcristi, bailie of Wigtown (ER., XII, p. 168), and he is doubtless the Symon M'Cristine or McCristin, sheriff-depute of Wigtown, who was chased by a man "with a drawn quhinzeare" in 1511 (Agnew, p. 142; Trials, I, p. 89). William Makcrystyn had sasine of lands in Wigtownshire in 1513 (ER., XIV, p. 539), John Makcristyne was burgess of Dumfries in 1506 (Edgar, p. 229), and Gilbert M'Cristin held land in the same town, 1544 (Anderson, Prat. Book). Sir Donald McCristyn was chaplain of the chapel of S. Arane (i.e. S. Oran) in Iona, 1542 (RSS., II, 4779). John M'Criste of Clonsche, juror on assize in Wigtown, 1544, appears again in the following year as Joh. Makcristine (RMS., III, 3032, 3214), and Gilfernan M'Cristin witnessed an Inveryne charter of 1468 (Lamont, p. 22). McChristan 1684, M'Chrystine 1503, M'Crastyne 1532, Macrystane 1543, Makcriste 1529, Makcristin 1539.
