As this name, is derived from the diminutive of Christopher it is more properly spelt MacChristal, but the form given above is now the more usual. It is seldom met outside Ulster. Woulfe says it is a Co.

Down name but in fact it belongs rather to Counties Armagh and Tyrone as modern birth registrations testify.

The hearth money rolls of the 1660's record it in those counties and also Co. Derry, with one family in Co. Antrim. The name is of Scottish origin and was introduced into Ireland in the seventeenth century.
