MACLATCHIE, Maclatchy, Macletchie, Macclatchie, Macclatchy: MIr. Mac Gilla Eidich, 'son of Eidich's gillie.' There is a Mac Gilla Eidich in AU. (s.a. 1197). Surnames recorded in Ayrshire and Galloway. George McClechie was the king's sergeant within the sheriffdom of Arne, 1519 (Ros). John M'Cletchie appears in Ayr, 1656 (Ayr, p. 197). George M'Clatchy, a native of Ireland, joined the Church of Scotland in 1840, and died in London, 1857 (Fasti). Thomas M'Clatchie, missionary in China, in latter half of nineteenth century, was apperently living in 1876, and Thomas Russell Hillier MacClatchie, of H. M. Consular Service and member of the Asiatic Society of Japan, who died in 1886, may have been his son.
