MACCALMAN, Maccalmon: Gaelic MacCalmain, 'son of Caiman.' A variant of Maccolman, which see. It is also translated Dove, which see, and it often represents Murchison, which see. Mr. Alexander McAlman, dean of Argyll, was allowed to take the Test, 1682 (RPC., 3. ser VII, p. 343), Jon McCalmin was a fencible-man in Nether Lorn, 1692 (Commons, p. 35), and Archibald M'Calman was schoolmaster at Dull, 1765 (Dunkeld). Gillenem mac Coleman witnessed charters by Duncan, son of Gilbert son of Fergus of Galloway, of lands in Carrie, c. 1200 or earlier (Metros, I, p. 22, 24), As Gillenem Accoueltan he is witness to a charter by Roger de Scalebroc of lands in Carrik in the reign of William the Lion (ibid., p. 25). As Gillenem Maccolem he witnessed a charter by Raderic Mac Gillescop of lands in the same territory to the Abbey of Melrose in the same reign (ibid., p. 29). As Gillenef Okeueltal he again appears as witness to a grant of lands in the same territory in the reign of Alexander II (ibid., p. 172). See Maccalman.
