MACCOOK: An old surname in Kintyre and Arran, but usually simply Cook in English.

(1) From Irish MacCug, son of Hugh, a branch of the Burkes (Joyce). John M'Cuk, Andrew M'Cuk, and Richard M'Cuk were tenants under the Douglases in Garvald, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lviii), and William Mokcok (a papal spelling), priest, petitioned for the perpetual vicarage of Crosmichaells in the diocese of Whitehern, 1381 (Pop. Pet., I, p. 556). (2) from Irish Mac Dhabhuc (in the spoken language MacCuag), son of Davuc, a diminutive of David. John M'Coug in Killean parish, 1686, and Kath. M'Coick in Lergiemore, 1695 (Argyll). McCoacke 1786, McCock 1762, M'Cook 1774, Mack Cook 1787, Mc couk 1770, M'couke 1728, McCuk 1768; M'Couck, MacCoaig. The name has been popularly explained by a bit of folklore, from "cubhag (pron. k'uh'ak) which is formed directly from -coo of 'cuckoo,' by the addition of the native suffix" (Prof. Fraser, SGS., I, p. 207). Two persons named Mc Cick and one named Mc Kick are in Lismore, 1692, several persons named Mc Kyek appear in Kilbride in same year (Commons, p. 29).
