McCork Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

MACCORC: About 1290 Malcolm, earl of Levenax confirmed the grant by Thomas de Cremennane of the quarter lands of Croyne to Murdach MacKork (Levenax, p. 80). As Morthan MacKorc he is mentioned in the inhibition by the bishop of Glasgow directed against Malcolm, earl of Lennox and his adherents in 1294 (RMP., p. 203). In other documents of the same period he is referred to as Murechauch or Murechanich (the latter evidently a misprint) filius Kork (Levenax, p. 79, 81). Kork or Corc was one of the sons of Alwyn, second earl of Levenax (ibid., p. 98). Corc is an old Irish personal name (in gen. In LL., 349a as Cuirc: from corc, 'heart'). It also occurs as Cure- in an ogham inscription found at Rathmalade, Ireland (Macalister, Studies, I, p. 72). See also Maccurk.
