MACCOSHAM, Maccoshim, Maccoshen, Maccoshin: Gaelic MacCoiseam. The name in fuller form is represented by Gillecostentin of 1230 in the Registrum de Dunfermelyn (p. 111). James Makcosshen, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder in 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Duncan Roy M'Osham or McCosham was declared a rebel by the Privy Council in 1671 (RPC., 3. ser. III, p. 371), decree was pronounced against Duncan McCoshin in Wruchill for spoliation in 1684 (ibid., 3. ser. IX, p. 579), and Niall McCoshan witnessed a decreit by Niall Campbell of Inveraray in 1671 (Genealogist, new ser. XXXV, p. 40). John M'Cosham in Caolchurilan in Kilchrenan parish is in record in 1685 (Argyll), Donala M'Cosham in Crouashan in 1699 (Argyll Inv,), John M'Cosham in Keames, parish of Kilchrennan, in 1702 (Argyll), Duncan M'Cosham in Ederlinemore in 1706 (Campbell, I, p. 63), and Archibald M'Coshim from Inveraray graduated at the University of Glasgow in 1852. A small loch in Colonsay is (or rather was) known as Lochan Moine nic Coiseam (M'Neill, Colonsay, p. 30). The name occurs in Islay as Maccoshin, and is there etymologized as MacOisein, 'son of Ossian.' Duncan Ban MacIntyre, the Gaelic poet, made the name famous by calling the gun he used in stalking Nic Coiseam, 'Cosham s daughter.' Mc Coasam 1692, Mc Osham 1724.
