MACCOSKRIE, Maccoskery, Maccoskry: Gaelic MacChosgrach, 'son of Coscrach' or 'Coscarach' (victorious, from coscur, victory). The name occurs in the Book of Deer in the genitive at Cosgreg. An individual named Coscrach, of some importance in early time, gave name to Fearann Coscraigh in Sutherland. Duuene MacCoscrach witnessed a charter by Maldouen, third earl of Levenax to Malcolm, the son of Duncan, of the whole of Glaskell, c. 1217 (Lennox, II, p. 402). There was an old Galloway family of this name. Many references to them occur in the Register of the Privy Council between 1540-1640, under MacCoskerie, MacCoskry, and MacCoskery. William Macoscrie was charged with being a disorderly person in the parish of Kirkmabreck, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 573). Donald M'Coscrich in Inverin, parish of Kilfinan, 1686 (Argyll), and John M'Coskrie was miller at Ferrytoun, 1771 (Kirkcudbright). In 1684 the name appears in record (Parish) as McCorsquey, McCroscre, McCroscrie, McCroskrie, McKorscra, and McKoscry.
