Ottir do lucht Insi Gall,' Mac Ottir one of the people of the Hebrides, is mentioned in 1142 (AFM., II, p. 1069). Hugh Macdonald, the Sleat seanachaidh, mentions a Murdo MacCotter who took part in an expedition against Orkney c. 1460 (HP., I, p. 37). John McCotter possessed the particate of land called Erleseat, Aberdeenshire, 1667 (RMS.). John M'Coatter of Knocknapark, Ross-shire, took the Test, 1685 (Sc. Ant., XIII, p. 39; RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 418).
