MACCOUL, Maccoull: A form of Macdougall, which see. In 1497 we have mention of the tenement of Nigel Makcowl in Glasgow (REG., p. 476). John Makcoule held lands in Durroure in 1500 (RMS., II, 2565). Allan M'Cowle of Rogary was admitted burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1579 (Burgesses). Thomas Mackcoul was burgess of Inverness, 1603 (Rec. Inv., II, p. 10), and Donald McConeill VcCoull in Craigdarg was fined for reset of Clan Gregor in 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 629). In 1630 Maccoulls were included among "brokin and law-lesse lymmars of the clan Gregour and other brokin clans" (RPC., 2. ser. IV, p. 100). M'Coul of Raray is an old branch of the Macdougalls of Dunolly. Lapis M'Coull or M'Dougau is the name given an ancient stone weight in 1578 (Coll p. 165,172). MacCouil 1594, McCoule 1684.

Variations "of this type are due to Gaels living in non-Celtic localities, where the unskilled natives fell upon Highlanders by lip and pen till they hardly knew their own address" (Long, Personal and family names, p. 286).
