MACROBIN: In Gaelic MacRoibin, 'son of Robin. ' A Highland border name from Robin, Scots diminutive of Robert, and compare Dunrobin (= fort of Robin), perhaps so named from Robert, earl of Sutherland, in one of whose charters the name first appears (1401). A remission was granted to Patrick McRobin, one of those holding the Castle of Dunbertane against the king in 1489 (APS., XII, p. 34; Lennox, II, p. 133). John Dow McRobyn in Dysart and John McRobyn in Knockyle were fined for aiding Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 636,644), Margrat MacRobin and Marion MacRobin were residents in the parish of Borgue in 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 567), and Janet M'Robine in Grange of Balmaghie in 1752 (Kirkcudbright). M'Robbine 1663.
