MACCUBBIN, Maccubbing: An old Dumfriesshire surname and a common one in the Stewartry. The family gave name to M'Cubbinstone in Dumfriesshire. Martin M'Cubyn or M'Cubyne was tenant in the mill of Dalfubill, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lvii), Brice Macobyn, Scottish merchant, had a safe conduct to exercise his trade in England, 1398 (Bain, IV, 504). John Makcubeyn held the ten shilling land of Trudonag in 1404 (Crossraguel, I, p. 38). Fergus Makcubyn and Johne Makcubyn his son, followers of the earl of Cassilis, were respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). John Makcubyng had a booth in Dumfries, 1567 (Edgar, p. 242). William McCuben in Ardlachie was lined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 630). Fergus M'Cubein was retoured heir of Fergus M'Cubein of Knockdollian in Carrick, 1677 (Retouru, Ayr, 611), and Anne McUbein was spouse to Mr. Antony Shaw, minister at Commonell, 1662. Fergus McAbin of Knockdolian contributed to repairs of St. Andrews University, 1681 (PSAS., LIV, p. 229). Alexander MacUbine or M'Ubine in Irongray was hanged for being a Covenanter, 1685 (Hanna, II, p. 256,265), James M'Cubyne was provost of Jedburgh before 1693 (Peebles CR.). McCowbyn 1530, M'Cubbin 1675, M'Cubbine 1643, McCubeine 1637, M'Cubene and M'Cubine 1602, Makcubyn 1535, M'Cwbene 1515; MacCubben, M'Ubin. 'Son of Cubbin,' a mutation of Gibbon.
