MACCUISH, Maccooish: MacCuis (a Uist name), otherwise known there as a sept of the Macmhannains, McMannain (Henderson, NI.). The name is also found in the north of Skye. In Harris the form is MacChuthais (Henderson, Leabhar nan Gleann, p. 85). In 1718 the following names appear in the rent-roll of Sir Donald Macdonala's estate of North Uist: Donald M'Cowis of Clachan, Neill M'Kuish of Vallakuy, and Donald McChowis of Ulleray. Mr. D. J. McCuish in Oban Times says his name is from Macdubhsidh (See under Macfee). In the Isle of Man we have Kewish 1618 (pron. Keouish), Kewsh (1683), from MacUais according to Moore, Manx names, p. 46. compare MacCoise (Woulfe, p. 334). Mr. D. J. McCuish says that several hundred years ago some Macphees "found their way into North Uist and other neighbouring islands and according to old Rent books, the North Uist sept of the clan spelt their name Macowis, modernised as MacCuish. I, myself am a great-grandson of one of the clan named 'Dubsith'" (in Oban Times, January, 1935)."A family in North Uist is known as 'Dubh-sith.' Black fairy, from a tradition that the family have been familiar with the fairies in their fairy flights and secret migrations" (Carrnina Gadelica, ed. II, v. 2, p. 354).
