MACKERLEY, Mackerlie, Macerlich: From Gaelic Mac Thearlaich, 'son of Charles.' A common surname in Breadalbane from two to three hundred years ago. Neil M'Ewin M'Kerlich, an accomplice of Donald Gorme of Slate, had remission for his share in laying waste Troutemess in Skye, 1541 (RSS., II, 3943). Decreet against William McCairlie in Quhitherne (Whithorn), 1577 (RPC., II, p. 646). Archibald M'Carlie was occupier of the two mark land of Grenen, Kintyre, 1596 (HP., III, p. 74), and Vc Herloch, 'grandson of Charles,' appears in 1584 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 185). Donald Makerliche possessed the seven markland of Ardewnak in 1591 (BBT., p. 248). John McKerlich in Finlarg was fined for reset of Clan Gregor, 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 635), and Callum M'Kerlich was one of the laird of Glenurquhay's tenants, 1638 (BBT., p. 399). M'Cairlich and Charlieson in BBT., appear to have been Campbells originally, and in Argyllshire they appear under the old name of M'Kerliche (Rev. P. J. Campbell in Celt. Mon., September, 1907). McCarlie, McCairly, M'Carole, McKairlie, McKairly, McKcairly, McKearlie, and McKearly, all in 1684 (Parish).
