Gaelic MacDhiarmaid, 'son of Dermid, which see. The name is a comparatively rare one in record, and when it does appear it is sometimes corrupted into M'Kennit, etc. The Macdiarmids of Glenlyon claim or claimed to be the oldest if not the aboriginal race of the district. Nemeas Mactarmayt was rector of St Conganus de Duybrinis (Durinish) and afterwards vicar of Kilchoman in Islay, 1427 (Pop. Lett., VIII, p. 23). John Makeyrmit was a sufferer from the hership of Petty, 1502 (Rose, p. 176), and another John McKeremyt was tenant of Pollouchquhy, 1504 (ER., XII, p. 667). Jhone McChdrmeit of Menyenis was partner to a bond of manrent, 1533 (Cawdor, p. 159). Jhone Malchermyk, one of the 'mairs and officiaris of the schirefdome of Pertht,' 1529 (Crandtully, I, p. 88). Finlay Dow McKermeid in Glenlyoun was fined for reset of Clan Gregor in 1613 (RPC., XIV, p. 633). Gillemertene M'Kennit in Soccoth, a Glenurquhay vassal, 1638 (BBT., p. 403). Archibald McDiarmott was a charter witness at Inverlevirmore, 1659 (Poltalloch Writs, p. 76), and Robert MacDermit was liberated from the Tolbooth of Elgin, 1685 (Elgin, I, p. 336). John Dow McDearmeid was tenant of Bols in Islay, 1686 (Bk. Islay, p. 518), John McKermet, rebel in parish of Kilbrandan, 1685 (Commons, p. 11), and Alexander M'Dermite was 'toun clerk deput of Air,' 1687 (Ayr, p. 211). John McDermeit was a student at Glasgow University in 1698, as was also Patrick M'Dermant of St. Quivox, Ayrshire, in 1811. Several M'Diarmids were among the duke of Atholl's Fencible men enrolled in Glenlyon in 1706 (HMon, III, p. 215-216), and Isabel M'Kearmet is recorded in Ground of Ballachin, 1700 (Dunkeld). In the Kirk session record of the entry relating to Colin Macdiarmid, the Reay country bard, drowned in 1799, his name is spelled Macdermot. Jon McKiarmid appears in Nether Lorn, 1692 (Commons, p. 34). McDiarmoid 1669, Macdermant 1816, McDiarmoid 1669, McKimniad (in Kilmelford) 1692. See also Mactahmayt.
