These are notable enough in Ireland; in America their number is quite remarkable. Mr. V. X. McEnaney of Toronto has sent me a list of no less than 38 variants, which appear in official telephone and other directories, all but four of which are American or Canadian. Still more remarkable is the fact that the tombstones of six members of one family all record the name in a different form. Four were buried in the cemetery at Caledon, Ontario, viz. Peter McEneaney, the father, Mary McAneaney, the mother, Francis McAneney and Patrick McEnaney, sons; the other two children went to New York, where they were buried at St. Mary's Monastery, Dunkirk) under the names of John Bird and Catherine McEneany. Peter and his wife Mary were both born in Co. Monaghan in 1792. Five of their six children were also born there, before they emigrated about the year 1829.

The list includes also some cases where the prefix Mac not Me is used, but these cannot of course be regarded as variant spellings.
