User-submitted Reference

The McEwen Clan were fishermen and renowned archers in the very northern part of Scotland. Common to the area is a type of tree that produces a very strong yet flexible wood, ideal for making bows, arrows and fishing poles. The trees are called Ewe trees hence the name McEwen or Sons of the Ewe tree. The clan crest features a ewe tree stump in the middle, which reflects the harvesting of the wood, but also regrowth after loss or misfortune. They were a very difficult clan to conquer because of the advantage of geographical height to the south making archers very deadly and the sea to the north which sustained the population during a seige.
