Michael's aisle of the church of Fearn is an effigy of Abbot Finlay M'Fead or M'Faid with the inscription: Hic jacet Finlaius M'Fead Abbas de Fern qui obiit anno mcccclxxxv (New statistical account, Ross, p. 41)."The king esteemed him so highly that he and his descendants were allowed to bear the name of Fearn as their family name" (Gordon, Monasticon, Glasgow, 1868, p. 351). Gilcrist McPaid, tenant in Dalmoloak, Kynnarde, in 1539 (ER., XVII, p. 671), Robert M'Faitt at the Mill of Inchrie, witness in 1596 (Laing, 1312), Duncan M'Phoid, an engager on royalist side, 1649 (IDR., p. 367), George M'Feat in Achmar, parish of Port, 1674 (Dunblane), John Macfeat was a messenger in Stirling in 1729, and Ebenezer M'Feat was mathematical tutor to Sir Walter Scott.
